In the reshuffle after the sudden resignation of the [[Secretary of State for Transport]], [[Ruth Kelly]], during the 2008 Labour Party Conference, Hoon became the Secretary of State for Transport on 3 October 2008. In January 2009, Hoon gave the official go-ahead for the controversial [[expansion of Heathrow Airport]].
