Mowat was a strong supporter of the [[Green Party of Canada]] and a close friend of the party's leader [[Elizabeth May]]. The Green Party sent a [[direct mail]] fundraising appeal in Mowat's name in June 2007, and that same year Mowat became a patron of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust by donating over {{convert|200|acre|km2}} of his land in [[Cape Breton Island]] to the Nature Trust.
