===Support for the Israeli government=== In 1982, at the request of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Wiesel agreed to resign from his position as chairman of a [[International Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide|planned international conference]] on the Holocaust and the [[Armenian genocide]].
