In the year 2023 36,174 (83.4%) babies were born to mothers with Finnish background, and 7,209 (16.6%) to mothers with foreign background. Persons with Finnish background are defined as persons who have at least one parent born in Finland. Of those newborns that have mothers with foreign background 2,741 had Asian mothers, 2,683 had European mothers (both EU and non-EU countries), 1,355 had African mothers, and 171 had American mothers. 249 babies were born to mothers with unknown background.<ref>{{cite web|title=Statistics Finland’s free-of-charge statistical databases|url=https://pxdata.stat.fi/PxWeb/pxweb/en/StatFin/StatFin__synt/statfin_synt_pxt_12dp.px/table/tableViewLayout1}}</ref>
