Under the [[Local Government Act 1972]], Chorley became the core of a larger non-metropolitan district on 1 April 1974. The present [[Chorley (borough)|Borough of Chorley]] has forty-two councillors, representing 14 three-member [[Wards of the United Kingdom|electoral wards]] in Chorley town council. The Member of Parliament for the constituency of Chorley, since 1997, is [[Lindsay Hoyle]], [[Speaker of the House of Commons (United Kingdom)|Speaker of the House of Commons]].
