On 26 January 1844,{{sfnp|Bain|1911|p=932}} his 81st birthday, Charles John was found unconscious in his chambers having suffered a stroke. His remains were interred after a state funeral in Stockholm's [[Riddarholmen Church]].{{sfnp|Palmer|1990|p=248}} He was succeeded by his only son, [[Oscar I of Sweden|Oscar I]].{{sfnp|Ripley|Dana|1879|p=571}}
