===2000 census===
In 2000, the city included 6,251 households and 4,206 families. The population density was {{convert|1,067.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 6,729 housing units at an average density of {{convert|461.8|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 86.47% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 9.05% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 2.27% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.01% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]],  0.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.69% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.30% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population were [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 6,251 households in the city, with an average of 2.43 members. Of these households:
