By the end of 2009, all of Borders's directly owned overseas locations were sold or closed, leaving only franchise stores in Dubai and Oman.{{citation needed|date=September 2011}}

International Borders stores still operate in Middle Eastern countries including [[the United Arab Emirates]], Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. These stores are now under different ownership from the original Borders Group, and were unaffected by their store closures. In Dubai, [[Al Maya Group]] purchased lifetime rights to the Borders brand in the Middle East in 2015, and diversified to books, toys and stationery.<ref name="dubai" />
