== Casualties ==
Russian casualties as a result of the battle are often discussed among historians; in his memoirs, Hindenburg named the number of Russian prisoners at 92,000 people. This is also confirmed by the Reichsarchiv.<ref> Reichsarchiv. Der Weltkrieg 1914–1918. B.2. S.230</ref> As well as up to 50,000 KIA.<ref>Reichsarchiv.Der Weltkrieg 1914–1918. B.2</ref> However, these figures perhaps are false, since only half of Samsonov's total army was encircled.{{sfn|Брусилов|2023|p=49}}{{sfn|Oleynikov|2016|p=233}}{{efn|There were no more than two corps surrounded, which successfully operated separately from the rest of the army. The Germans were able to surround them only because of the mistakes of the Russian command and the lack of normal communication with the First Army.{{sfn|Zayonchkovski|2002|pp=183–186}}}} Some of the troops were also able to break out of the encirclement; as such, the losses cannot be more than 80,000 people according to Alexei Oleynikov.<ref>Олейников.А.В Потери русской и Германской армии в Восточно-Прусской операции 1914.//Рейтар.Воено-исторический журнал. 2011.N52.P.201-219</ref> An attempt to analyze the reports of units of formations participating in the battle shows that Russian losses can reach 120,219, including 5,522 killed, 12,326 wounded and 75,435 missing. 26,936 could not be divided into categories, most likely they are dead.{{sfn|Nelipovich|2023|p=265}}
