Badajoz is located in the southwest of the [[Iberian Peninsula]] on the bank of the [[Guadiana River]] on the border with Portugal.{{sfn|Frey|Frey|1995|p=25}} It is the capital city of the province of the same name.{{Sfn|Ring|Salkin|La Boda|1995|p=72}} It is {{convert|61|km}} from [[Mérida, Spain|Mérida]], {{convert|89|km}} from [[Cáceres, Spain|Cáceres]], {{convert|217|km}} from [[Seville]], {{convert|227|km}} east of [[Lisbon]], and {{convert|406|km}} from [[Madrid]]. The newer part of the city is on the left bank of the river, with several industrial estates and the university hospital.

In geological terms, Badajoz is located in the South Submeseta.{{sfn|Yuste|1980|p=208}} It was founded on the banks of the Guadiana River on a [[Paleozoic]] limestone hill, carved by the river. On this hill is the Alcazaba, one of the main sights of the city. The municipality of Badajoz contains soils derived from tertiary deposits, dating to the Paleozoic era. Its average altitude is {{convert|184|m}} above sea level. The highest points are located in the Cerro del Viento ({{convert|219|m}}), at Fuerte San Cristóbal ({{convert|218|m}}) and Cerro de la Muela ({{convert|205|m}}). The lowest point is the Guadiana River ({{convert|168|m}}).

===Climate===

The climate of Badajoz has drastic changes between the summer and winter as seen in the chart below. Altitude of the measuring station is {{Convert|203|m}}. The average annual temperature is {{Convert|17.3|C}}. The average high temperature in July is around {{Convert|35|C}} whereas the coldest average low temperatures is around {{Convert|3|C}} in January.
