Having fled to the [[Somerset Levels]], Alfred was purportedly given shelter by a peasant woman who, unaware of his identity, asked him to mind some wheaten cakes she left baking by the fire.{{Sfn|Savage|1988|p=101}}{{Sfn|Pollard|2006|p=178}}{{Sfn|Horspool|2006|p=2}} Preoccupied with the problems of his kingdom, Alfred accidentally let the cakes burn, and was roundly scolded by the woman upon her return.
