He and his first wife, Jeremy Yaffe, had two sons: [[Adam Arkin|Adam]] (born August 19, 1956) and [[Matthew Arkin|Matthew]] (born March 21, 1960). He was married to actress-screenwriter Barbara Dana from 1964 to 1994; she appeared with him in segments of ''[[Sesame Street]]'' in the 1970s. They lived in [[Chappaqua, New York]].
