==Ridership== High-speed rail ridership has been increasing rapidly since 2000. At the beginning of the century, the largest share of ridership was on the Japanese [[Shinkansen]] network. In 2000, the Shinkansen was responsible for about 85% of the cumulative world ridership up to that point.<ref name="whhh"/><ref>{{cite web |title=新幹線旅客輸送量の推移|trans-title=Changes in Shinkansen Passenger Traffic Volume |url=https://www.mlit.go.jp/common/000232384.pdf |website=国土交通省|trans-website=Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism |access-date=17 November 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130122195823/https://www.mlit.go.jp/common/000232384.pdf |archive-date=22 January 2013 |language=ja-JP |url-status=live}}</ref> This has been progressively surpassed by the Chinese high-speed rail network, which has been the largest contributor of global ridership growth since its inception. As of 2018, annual ridership of the Chinese high-speed rail network is over five times larger than that of the Shinkansen. {| class="wikitable" style="text-align:right;" |+ Comparison of high-speed rail and airlines, by year: annual passengers worldwide (in millions).<ref name="whhh">{{cite web |language=ja |url=http://whhh.fc2web.com/ktx/hikaku.html |script-title=ja:KTX vs 新幹線 徹底比較 |access-date=6 May 2015 |archive-date=9 October 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191009122921/http://whhh.fc2web.com/ktx/hikaku.html |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref name="mlit">{{cite web |language=ja |url=http://www.mlit.go.jp/common/000232384.pdf |script-title=ja:新幹線旅客輸送量の推移}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id%3D20140628000066%26cid%3D1206 |title=Taiwan HSR operator pitches restructuring idea to shareholders |access-date=12 October 2015 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150208160542/http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20140628000066&cid=1206 |archive-date=8 February 2015}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://ktdb.go.kr/web/guest/419 |title=월별 일반철도 역간 이용인원 |access-date=12 October 2015 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160104124636/http://ktdb.go.kr/web/guest/419 |archive-date=4 January 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |language=zh-hans |url=http://finance.people.com.cn/stock/n/2015/0130/c67815-26478015.html |script-title=zh:铁路2014年投资8088亿元 超额完成全年计划--财经--人民网 |publisher=People's Daily Online Finance}}</ref> Only systems with {{convert|200|km/h|0|abbr=on}} service speeds or higher are considered. !scope="col"| Year !scope="col"| Annual world HSR<ref name="whhh" /><ref name="mlit" /> !scope="col"| Annual world airlines<ref>{{cite web|url=https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IS.AIR.PSGR|title=Air transport, passengers carried |website=data.worldbank.org}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.iata.org/pressroom/pr/Pages/2014-10-16-01.aspx|title=IATA – New IATA Passenger Forecast Reveals Fast-Growing Markets of the Future|last=IATA|access-date=6 May 2015|archive-date=17 May 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150517034249/http://www.iata.org/pressroom/pr/Pages/2014-10-16-01.aspx|url-status=dead}}</ref> |- !scope="row"| 2000 | 435 || 1,674 |- !scope="row"| 2005 | 559 || 1,970 |- !scope="row"| 2010 | 895 || 2,628 |- !scope="row"| 2012 | 1,185 || 2,894 |- !scope="row"| 2014 | 1,470 || 3,218 |- !scope="row"| 2016 | ''~2,070'' (prelim) || 3,650 |- !scope="row"| 2017 | x || 4,030 |- !scope="row"| 2018 | x || 4,290 |- !scope="row"| 2019 | 3,291.1 || 4,460 |- !scope="row"| 2020 | x || 1,770 |- !scope="row"| 2021 | x || 2,280 |- |} {| class="wikitable sortable" |+High-speed rail ridership in the world.
