Zedekiah (whose name at birth was Mattaniah) was the third of [[Josiah]]'s four sons. His three brothers were [[Jehoiakim|Eliakim]] (born c. 634 BCE), [[Jehoahaz of Judah|Shallum]] (born c. 633 BCE), and Johanan. Hamutal—the daughter of Jeremiah of [[Libnah]]—was mother to Mattaniah and his older brother Shallum, while Zebidah—the niece of [[Pedaiah]]—was mother to Eliakim.<ref>{{bibleverse|1|Chronicles|3:15|NIV}}</ref><ref>{{bibleverse|2|Kings|23:36|NIV}}</ref><ref>{{bibleverse-nb|2|Kings|24:18|NIV}}</ref><ref>{{bibleverse-nb|2|Kings|23:31|NIV}}</ref> Zedekiah had multiple wives, sons, and daughters, but only one son is named in the Bible, Malchiah. 

Shallum succeeded Josiah as king of Judah, under the name [[Jehoahaz of Judah|Jehoahaz]].<ref>{{bibleverse|1|Chronicles|3:15|NIV}}, {{bibleverse||Jeremiah|22:11|NIV}}</ref> Shallum was succeeded by Eliakim, under the name [[Jehoiakim]].<ref>{{bibleverse|2|Chronicles|36:4|NIV}}</ref><ref>{{bibleverse|2|Kings|23:34|NIV}}</ref> Jehoiakim was succeeded by his own son [[Jeconiah]].<ref>{{bibleverse|2|Chronicles|36:8|NIV}}</ref> 

Nebuchadnezzar II deposed Jeconiah and installed his uncle Mattaniah on the throne, under the name Zedekiah.<ref>{{bibleverse|2|Kings|24:17|NIV}}</ref> Zedekiah was the last king of Judah before the kingdom was conquered by [[Babylon]] and the people [[Babylonian captivity|exiled]].
