The racial makeup of Walnut Creek was 66.3% [[White Americans|White]], 2.2% [[African Americans|African American]], 0.3% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 16.7% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.2% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 3.5% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 10.9% from two or more races. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race were 10.4% of the population. The census reported that 98.7% of the population lived in households, 0.4% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0.9% were institutionalized. There were 32,246 households, out of which 21.8% included children under the age of 18, 46.4% were married-couple households, 5.2% were [[cohabitation|cohabiting]] couple households, 32.8% had a female householder with no partner present, and 15.7% had a male householder with no partner present. 36.6% of households were one person, and 22.2% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.15. There were 18,187 [[family (U.S. Census)|families]] (56.4% of all households). The age distribution was 17.0% under the age of 18, 5.1% aged 18 to 24, 25.1% aged 25 to 44, 23.8% aged 45 to 64, and 29.1% who were 65{{nbsp}}years of age or older. The median age was 47.5{{nbsp}}years. For every 100 females, there were 86.0 males. There were 34,251 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,733.4|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units |units|}}, of which 32,246 (94.1%) were occupied.
