There were 84,872 housing units at an average density of {{convert|64|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the county was 66.3% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 29.6% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.3% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 1.2% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.1% [[Race (United States Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.5% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.1% from two or more races. Nearly 3.1% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

The population core of the county lies in [[Tuscaloosa, Alabama|Tuscaloosa]]-[[Northport, Alabama|Northport]] [[conurbation]] (including [[Coaling, Alabama|Coaling]], [[Coker, Alabama|Coker]], and [[Holt, Alabama|Holt]] [[Census-designated place|CDP]]). The combined 2000 Census population of this area (not including their undesignated suburban census areas) is 103,367, accounting for 62.7% of the county in population, while only accounting for 6.9% in area. Consequently, the population density of the central population core is {{convert|1,137|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|persons&nbsp;|persons}}, while the density of the county outside the central population core is only {{convert|44|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|persons&nbsp;|persons}}.
