In the wake of Soviet repudiation of Tsarist bonds, the nationalisation of foreign-owned property and confiscation of foreign assets, and Entente forces [[Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War|landing on Russian territory]], the Soviets and Germany signed an additional agreement on 27 August 1918. The Soviets agreed to pay six billion [[German papiermark|marks]] in compensation for German losses.

Three secret clauses provided for German military action against Entente forces on Russian soil, as well as the expulsion of British troops from Baku.<ref name="Kotkin 2014"/>
