== Theories about source of the story == * The 2005 book ''The Last Sentry: Valery Sablin and the True Hunt for Red October'' by Gregory D Young and Nate Braden suggests that the novel was based on the [[Soviet frigate Storozhevoy]] [[Valery Sablin|mutiny]] in 1975.<ref>{{cite book|title=The Last Sentry: Valery Sablin and the True Hunt for Red October|author1=Gregory D. Clancy wrote to Young asking for a reference copy and permission to quote the thesis in the novel he was drafting. Clancy outlines ''The Hunt for Red October'' in considerable detail and concludes by asking Young for other reliable naval reference books.<ref>Clancy, Tom.
