===Similar species===

The smooth newt resembles the other, less widespread ''[[Lissotriton]]'' species. It can be confused especially with the closely related "smooth newt complex" species (marked with * in the table below) and the more distant palmate newt, which often occurs in the same area.{{r|1=WielstraCanestrelli2018|2=Grosse2011|p2=25}} Females are especially difficult to tell apart, as distinguishing features are mainly observed in the males at breeding season.{{r|1=Grosse2011|p1=19–41|2=Sparreboom2014|p2=225–235}}
