==Regulatory knowledge== A working knowledge of the relevant rules and regulations, including those of the [[International Maritime Organization]] is good seamanship as it ensures compliance with international, flag and port State requirements. For example, the [[International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea]] are the principal international rules for navigation between vessels at sea. Rule 2<ref name="COLREGS">{{cite book |date=2003 |title=Collision Regulations Convention (COLREGS) |location=London |publisher=International Maritime Organization |isbn=9789280141672}}</ref> sets out responsibility for safe navigation by stating {{Blockquote |text=''โNothing in these Rules shall exonerate any vessel or the owner, master or crew thereof, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with these Rules or of the neglect of any precaution, which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen, or by the special circumstances of the case.โ'' }} The ordinary practice of seaman is seen as equivalent wording for seamanship.<ref name="Knight505">{{cite book |last=Noel |first=John V |date=1991 |title=Knight's Modern Seamanship |publisher=Wiley |page=505-605 |isbn=9780471289487}}</ref> Other accepted practices of seamanship relating to the COLREGs include maintaining a proper look-out (Rule 5), proceeding at a safe speed (Rule 6) and taking correct actions to avoid collision (Rule 8).<ref name="COLREGS"/>
