As of the [[2010 United States census|2010 census]], there were 16,321 people, 6,651 households, and 4,171 families in the county. The population density was {{convert|11.4|PD/sqmi}}. There were 7,503 housing units at an average density of {{convert|5.2|/sqmi}}. The racial makeup of the county was 95.0% white, 2.0% American Indian, 0.7% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 53.0% were [[Germans|German]], 31.2% were [[Norwegians|Norwegian]], 7.0% were [[Irish people|Irish]], and 2.3% were [[Americans|American]].

Of the 6,651 households, 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 37.3% were non-families, and 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91. The median age was 39.4 years.
