Throughout his pontificate, Paul IV named 46 cardinals in four consistories, including Michele Ghislieri (the future [[Pope Pius V]]). According to Robert Maryks, the pope decided to nominate the [[Jesuit]] priest [[Diego Laynez]] to the cardinalate. However, Father [[Alfonso Salmerón]] warned [[Saint Ignatius of Loyola]] of this, as did Cardinal [[Otto Truchsess von Waldburg]].
