The glasses Root wore to play Milton had lenses so thick that he had to wear [[contact lens]]es to see through them. Even so, he still had no [[depth perception]]; he had to practice reaching for the stapler and was as a result grateful it had been painted red. [[Swingline]] provided the stapler after the filmmakers could not get permission to use either the Boston or [[Bostitch]] brands from their manufacturer.<ref name="EW oral history" />
