In 2012, voters approved a county [[charter]] under New York's municipal home rule law which established an independent [[county executive]] to head its executive branch and replace the board of supervisors with a nine-seat county legislature.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.co.montgomery.ny.us/sites/public/government/planning/charter/Charter_Development/default.aspx|title=Montgomery County Charter Commission|publisher=Montgomery County Charter Commission|location=[[Fonda, New York]]}}</ref>  Elections were held the next year and the county began operating under this charter on January 1, 2014. As of 2024, the legislature has 8 Republicans and 1 Democrat.
