== Later life and death == He later lived in retirement, reading, writing, publishing arrangements of his scores, texts about culture and politics. On occasions he took position: in 1999, opposing [[NATO]]'s [[Kosovo war]] and in 2003 against the [[Iraq War]]. Epitaphs were delivered by the president of the Hellenic Republic, Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou, and the general secretary of the [[Communist Party of Greece]], [[Dimitrios Koutsoumbas]].
