In 1985, Plimpton met actor [[River Phoenix]]. Initially, they did not get along well, but began a romantic relationship in February 1986 while co-starring in [[Peter Weir]]'s ''[[The Mosquito Coast (film)|The Mosquito Coast]]''.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Sugar, November 1998|url=http://aleka.org/phoenix/zines/phoeni27.html|access-date=September 30, 2021|website=aleka.org}}</ref> They went on to co-star in the [[Sidney Lumet]] film ''[[Running on Empty (1988 film)|Running on Empty]]''. Their relationship ended in June 1989 due to Phoenix's substance abuse, but they remained close friends until his death in 1993. Plimpton later stated, "When we split up, a lot of it was that I had learned that screaming, fighting, and begging wasn't going to change him.
