Music critic [[Greil Marcus]] remarked, "John's singing in the last verse of 'God' may be the finest in all of rock."<ref name="blaney56">Blaney 2005, p. 56</ref> In a retrospective review for ''[[Rolling Stone]]'', Robert Christgau wrote that the album's lyrics are political, existential, and carefully thought out, while Spector's production is elegantly simple so that each instrument resonates.
