The [[Office of the Information Commissioner (Ireland)|Office of the Information Commissioner]] ({{langx|ga| Oifig an Choimisinéara Faisnéise}}) in [[Republic of Ireland|Ireland]] was set up under the terms of the [[Freedom of Information Act 1997]], which came into effect in April 1998.<ref>{{cite ISB |year=1997|num=13 |section=33 |stitle=Establishment of office of Information Commissioner |title=Freedom of Information Act 1997 |date=21 April 1997}}</ref><ref>{{cite ISB |year=2014|num=30 |title=Freedom of Information Act 2014 |date=14 October 2014|section=43 |stitle=Continuance of office of Information Commissioner}}</ref> The Information Commissioner may conduct reviews of the decisions of public bodies in relation to requests for access to information. Since its creation, the office has been held simultaneously with that of the [[Ombudsman (Ireland)|Ombudsman]].
