The approach to the Holland Tunnel in [[Jersey City, New Jersey|Jersey City]] begins where the lower level of [[New Jersey Route 139|NJ Route 139]] and the [[Interstate 78 in New Jersey#Hudson County|Newark Bay Extension]] merge. On May 6, 1936, the section of what became Route 139/I-78 between Jersey Avenue and [[Marin Boulevard]] was named in memory of John F. Westbound traffic uses 14th Street while eastbound traffic uses 12th Street. There is a nine-lane [[toll plaza]] for eastbound traffic only at the eastern end of 12th Street, just west of the tunnel portal.<ref name="Stats" /> The original toll plaza had eight lanes;<ref name="nyt-1927-10-02" /> it was renovated in 1953–1954,<ref name="NYTimes-Tollbooths-1953" /><ref name="nris" />{{rp|6}} and the current nine-lane tollbooth was constructed in 1988.<ref name="NYTimes-Tollbooths-1988" /><ref name="nris" />{{rp|6}}
