==Geography== Fredericktown is in northern Madison County in the valley of the Little St. Francis River, a west-flowing tributary of the St. Francis River. U.S. Route 67 runs along the western border of the city, leading north 18 mi to Farmington and south 65 mi to Poplar Bluff. Missouri Route 72 passes through the north side of Fredericktown, leading east 41 mi to Jackson and west 20 mi to Ironton. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Fredericktown has a total area of 4.50 sqmi, of which 4.33 sqmi are land and 0.17 sqmi, or 3.78%, are water. City Lake, a reservoir on the Little St. Francis River, is in the northern extent of the city. Black Mountain is 12 mi southwest of Fredericktown. Highway E runs along the base of Black Mountain, beside the St. Francis River. While Black Mountain is only the 42nd highest point (above sea level) in Missouri, the mountain has the largest difference in elevation from the base to the summit. The St. Francis River, at the base of Black Mountain, is approximately 540 feet above sea level. The summit of Black Mountain is 1,502 feet above sea level, which is a difference of approximately 962 feet. In contrast, Taum Sauk Mountain, the highest point in Missouri, only rises about 700 feet from its base, because it rises from an already elevated plain. Taum Sauk is the highest mountain in Missouri; Black Mountain is the tallest. ===Climate=== {{Weather box |location = Fredericktown, Missouri (1991β2020 normals, extremes 1962βpresent) |single line = Y | Jan record high F = 74 | Feb record high F = 83 | Mar record high F = 87 | Apr record high F = 93 | May record high F = 94 | Jun record high F = 108 | Jul record high F = 109 | Aug record high F = 109 | Sep record high F = 100 | Oct record high F = 92 | Nov record high F = 85 | Dec record high F = 75 | year record high F = 109 | Jan high F = 41.6 | Feb high F = 46.9 | Mar high F = 56.8 | Apr high F = 68.1 | May high F = 76.1 | Jun high F = 84.1 | Jul high F = 87.9 | Aug high F = 87.0 | Sep high F = 80.1 | Oct high F = 69.0 | Nov high F = 56.0 | Dec high F = 45.1 | year high F = 66.6 | Jan mean F = 31.2 | Feb mean F = 35.3 | Mar mean F = 44.4 | Apr mean F = 54.8 | May mean F = 64.0 | Jun mean F = 72.3 | Jul mean F = 76.2 | Aug mean F = 74.6 | Sep mean F = 66.9 | Oct mean F = 55.3 | Nov mean F = 44.2 | Dec mean F = 34.7 | year mean F = 54.5 | Jan low F = 20.8 | Feb low F = 23.7 | Mar low F = 31.9 | Apr low F = 41.6 | May low F = 51.9 | Jun low F = 60.5 | Jul low F = 64.6 | Aug low F = 62.2 | Sep low F = 53.8 | Oct low F = 41.6 | Nov low F = 32.4 | Dec low F = 24.4 | year low F = 42.4 | Jan record low F = β24 | Feb record low F = β17 | Mar record low F = β6 | Apr record low F = 12 | May record low F = 24 | Jun record low F = 34 | Jul record low F = 42 | Aug record low F = 36 | Sep record low F = 23 | Oct record low F = 16 | Nov record low F = 3 | Dec record low F = β18 | year record low F = -24 | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 2.96 | Feb precipitation inch = 2.78 | Mar precipitation inch = 3.82 | Apr precipitation inch = 5.27 | May precipitation inch = 5.32 | Jun precipitation inch = 3.56 | Jul precipitation inch = 4.01 | Aug precipitation inch = 3.90 | Sep precipitation inch = 3.47 | Oct precipitation inch = 3.29 | Nov precipitation inch = 4.60 | Dec precipitation inch = 3.32 | year precipitation inch = 46.30 | Jan snow inch = 2.8 | Feb snow inch = 3.2 | Mar snow inch = 1.0 | Apr snow inch = 0.0 | May snow inch = 0.0 | Jun snow inch = 0.0 | Jul snow inch = 0.0 | Aug snow inch = 0.0 | Sep snow inch = 0.0 | Oct snow inch = 0.1 | Nov snow inch = 0.3 | Dec snow inch = 1.9 | year snow inch = 9.3 | unit precipitation days = 0.01 in | Jan precipitation days = 8.4 | Feb precipitation days = 7.8 | Mar precipitation days = 9.8 | Apr precipitation days = 10.1 | May precipitation days = 11.4 | Jun precipitation days = 7.8 | Jul precipitation days = 8.6 | Aug precipitation days = 7.6 | Sep precipitation days = 6.9 | Oct precipitation days = 7.5 | Nov precipitation days = 8.3 | Dec precipitation days = 8.7 | year precipitation days = 102.9 | unit snow days = 0.1 in | Jan snow days = 1.5 | Feb snow days = 1.7 | Mar snow days = 0.5 | Apr snow days = 0.0 | May snow days = 0.0 | Jun snow days = 0.0 | Jul snow days = 0.0 | Aug snow days = 0.0 | Sep snow days = 0.0 | Oct snow days = 0.0 | Nov snow days = 0.2 | Dec snow days = 1.2 | year snow days = 5.1 |source 1 = NOAA }}
