Erythromycin is easily inactivated by gastric acid; therefore, all orally administered formulations are given as either enteric-coated or more-stable salts or [[ester]]s, such as erythromycin [[succinate|ethylsuccinate]]. Erythromycin is very rapidly absorbed, and diffuses into most tissues and [[phagocyte]]s.
