As of the census of 2000,<ref name="GR2" /> the median income for a household in the town was $35,313, and the median income for a family was $39,688. Males had a median income of $31,120 versus $21,940 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $17,192. About 8.8% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 12.8% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

Newer construction is overflowing from Newport onto the Newport-Derby Road ([[US Route 5]]). Large retailers and other stores and restaurants are located on this stretch of road as well.
