Iraq's dominant ethnic group is [[Arabs]], who account for more than three-quarters of the population.

According to the [[The World Factbook|CIA World Factbook]], citing a 1987 Iraqi government estimate, the population of Iraq is formed of 75-80% Arabs (including [[Marsh Arabs]]) followed by 15-20% [[Kurds in Iraq|Kurds]] and other minorities form 5% of the country's population, including the [[Iraqi Turkmen|Turkmen]], [[Kaka'i]], [[Bedouins]], [[Gypsies in Iraq|Roma]], [[Assyrians in Iraq|Assyrians]], [[Circassians in Iraq|Circassians]], [[Mandaeans]], and [[Ajam of Iraq|Persians]].<ref name="TWFIraq">{{cite web|url=https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/iraq/ |title=Iraq|work=[[The World Factbook]]|date=22 June 2014}}</ref>

However, the [[International Crisis Group]] points out that figures from the 1987 census, as well as the 1967, 1977, and 1997 censuses, "are all considered highly problematic, due to suspicions of regime manipulation" because Iraqi citizens were only allowed to indicate belonging to either the Arab or Kurdish ethnic groups;<ref name="ICG">{{cite web|year=2008|title=Turkey and the Iraqi Kurds: Conflict or Cooperation?|url=http://www.genocidewatch.org/images/Iraq_08_11_13_Turkey_and_Iraqi_Kurds_Conflict_or_Cooperation.pdf|publisher=[[International Crisis Group]]|page=16|access-date=19 June 2018|archive-date=8 August 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190808043240/http://www.genocidewatch.org/images/Iraq_08_11_13_Turkey_and_Iraqi_Kurds_Conflict_or_Cooperation.pdf|url-status=dead}}</ref> consequently, this skewed the number of other ethnic minorities, such as Iraq's third largest ethnic group – the [[Iraqi Turkmen|Turkmen]].<ref name="ICG" />
