In 1978 the [[International Organization for Standardization]] published a system of three-digit alphabetic codes ([[ISO 4217]]) to denote currencies. Many currencies use a [[currency symbol]]. These are not subject to international standards and are not unique: the [[dollar sign]] in particular has many uses.
