Barnard's first marriage was to Aletta Gertruida Louw, a nurse, whom he married in 1948 while practising medicine in [[Ceres, Western Cape|Ceres]]. In October 2016, US Congresswoman [[Ann McLane Kuster]] stated that Barnard sexually assaulted her when she was 23 years old.
