===Name=== The name Chicago derives from the 17th century French rendering of ''shikaakwa'' or ''chicagou'', the Native American name for [[Allium tricoccum|ramps]] (''Allium tricoccum''), a type of edible wild [[leek]], which grew abundantly near the river.
