His widow, Betty, died on September 12, 1981.{{Citation needed |date=January 2023}}

When asked about Abbott shortly after his death, [[Groucho Marx]] replied that Abbott was "the greatest straight man that ever lived."<ref>Furmanek and Palumbo, p. 45.</ref>
