At the beginning of the 1994–95 season, the Hawks traded forward [[Kevin Willis]] to the [[Miami Heat]] for [[Steve Smith (basketball)|Steve Smith]] and [[Grant Long]]. During the season, coach Wilkens broke the record (previously held by [[Red Auerbach]]) for most victories by an NBA head coach with victory number 939. They ended up fifth in the Central Division with a 42–40 record and would be swept by the [[Indiana Pacers]] in the first round of the playoffs.
