Asquith had five children by his first wife, Helen, and two surviving children (three others died at birth or in infancy) by his second wife, Margot.{{sfn|Spender & Asquith}}

His eldest son, [[Raymond Asquith|Raymond]], after an academic career that outstripped his father's{{sfn|Jenkins|p=30}} was killed at the Somme in 1916.{{sfn|Jenkins|p=30}} His second son [[Herbert Asquith (poet)|Herbert]] (1881–1947) became a writer and poet and married [[Lady Cynthia Asquith|Cynthia Charteris]].{{sfn|Clifford|p=173}} His later life was marred by alcoholism.{{sfn|Clifford|p=474}} His third son [[Arthur Asquith|Arthur]] (1883–1939) became a soldier and businessman.{{sfn|Jenkins|p=30}} His only daughter by his first wife, [[Violet Bonham Carter|Violet, later Violet Bonham Carter]] (1887–1969), became a well-regarded writer and a life peeress as Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury.{{sfn|Clifford|p=475}} She married Asquith's [[Personal Private Secretary]] [[Maurice Bonham Carter]] in 1915. His fourth son [[Cyril Asquith, Baron Asquith of Bishopstone|Cyril]] (1890–1954) was born on the day Asquith became a QC{{sfn|Spender & Asquith|p=49}} and later became a [[Law Lord]].{{sfn|Jenkins|p=30}}

His two children by Margot were [[Elizabeth Bibesco|Elizabeth, later Princess Antoine Bibesco]] (1897–1945), a writer, who also struggled with alcohol,{{sfn|Clifford|p=476}} and [[Anthony Asquith]] (1902–1968),{{sfn|Margot Asquith 1962|loc=Appendix 1}} known as "Puffin", a film-maker, whose life was also severely affected by alcoholism.{{sfn|Clifford|p=476}}
