== In popular culture == In the Korean television series, ''[[My Love from the Star]]'', the character Do Min Joon (played by Kim Soo-Hyun) plays Mah-jong and becomes the best player in Seoul. Wong Kar-Wai's film ''[[In the Mood for Love]]'' takies place in 1962 Hong Kong. The families and owners who live in the boarding house play there for entire nights. The manga and anime ''[[Saki (manga)|Saki]]'' revolves around a high school Mahjong club. ''[[Akagi (manga)|Akagi]]'' and its prequel ''[[Ten (manga)|Ten]]'' deal with a college student who quickly becomes a prodigy of Mahjong, evolving within the Yakuza. Other manga with include ''[[Furiten-kun]]'', ''[[The Legend of the Gambler: Tetsuya]]'' and ''[[The Legend of Koizumi]]''. In Thomas Harris's novel ''[[Red Dragon (novel)|Red Dragon]]'', a serial killer, who calls himself the "Red Dragon", carves the Mahjong symbol corresponding to his nickname on a tree. Mahjong serves as a minor plot point in the 2016 film ''[[Arrival (film)|Arrival]]'' where General Shang uses the game to interact with the extraterrestrials. The video game series ''[[Like a Dragon]]'' allows a player to play Mah-jong games in the form of mini-games. In ''[[Final Fantasy XIV]]'', a game called Doman Mahjong, a version strongly inspired by Mah-jong Riichi, can be played individually or multiplayer at the Gold Saucer, a casino inspired by ''[[Final Fantasy VII]]''. The MMORPG offers two game rules, one option with kuitan authorizes the formation of the yaku Tanyao after the announcement of chi, pon or kan. In the 2008 American animated comedy film ''[[Kung Fu Panda (film)|Kung Fu Panda]]'', [[Po (Kung Fu Panda)|Po]]'s father, won his noodle shop in a Mahjong game. Mahjong is subtly present throughout the whole franchise of film, TV series and games. In Le théorème de Marguerite (2023) by Anna Novion, the heroine Marguerite, a brilliant doctoral student in mathematics at the ENS, starts playing Mah-jong to earn money. In the 2018 film [[Crazy Rich Asians]], the main character Rachel lets the extremely traditional mother of her boyfriend win a Mahjong game at a parlor as a major plot point to convey the nature of their relationship.
