He was Initiated into Freemasonry in Antiquity Lodge, No. 26, ([[Portsmouth]], England) in 1770.{{citation needed|date=October 2021}} This lodge no longer exists. He was a founder member of Phoenix Lodge, No. 257 (also in Portsmouth).
