In 1953, a new version of the film was created by film distributor and collector Raymond Rohauer, re-edited with an introduction and music. That version is still under copyright, because Rohauer filed a copyright registration in 1953 and renewed it in 1983.<ref name=pd/>

In 2016 or 2017, an original score was commissioned to celebrate the 90th anniversaries of both ''The General'' and the [[Hollywood Theatre (Portland, Oregon)|Hollywood Theatre]] in [[Portland, Oregon]].
