The SA was organized into several large regional {{lang|de|Gruppen}} ("Groups"). The group leader answered only to the
{{lang|de|Stabschef-SA}} or Hitler.{{sfn|Littlejohn|1990|pp=5, 7}} Each {{lang|de|Gruppe}} was made up of subordinate
{{lang|de|Brigaden}} ("Brigades").{{sfn|Littlejohn|1990|p=7}} Subordinate to the {{lang|de|Brigaden}} were the smaller [[regiment]]-sized {{lang|de|Standarten}}.{{sfn|Littlejohn|1990|p=7}} {{lang|de|SA-Standarten}} operated in every major German city and were split into even smaller units, known as {{lang|de|Sturmbanne}} and {{lang|de|Stürme}}.

The command nexus for the entire SA was the {{lang|de|Oberste SA-Führung}}, located in [[Stuttgart]]. The SA supreme command had many sub-offices to handle supply, finance and recruiting.

The SA also had several military training units. The largest was the {{lang|de|SA-Marine}}, which served as an auxiliary to the {{lang|de|[[Kriegsmarine]]}} (German Navy) and performed [[search and rescue]] operations as well as harbor defense. The SA also had an "army" wing, similar to the [[Waffen-SS]], known as {{lang|de|[[Panzer Corps Feldherrnhalle|Feldherrnhalle]]}}. This formation expanded from regimental size in 1940 to a fully-fledged armored corps ({{lang|de|Panzerkorps Feldherrnhalle}}) in 1945. As for units formed outside of Germany, after the success of the [[invasion of Poland]] in 1939, an SA unit, "Great Government" was formed. The units were renamed SA ''Wehrschützen-Bereitschaften'' in 1942. The title was abbreviated to SA ''Wehrbereitschaften'', thereafter.{{sfn|Littlejohn|1990|pp=39–40}}
