===19th century=== In 1886, the parish of Holy Trinity, Shoreditch, was created to meet the needs of a growing population; the first vicar was the [[Anglo-Catholic]] priest, Arthur Osborne Montgomery Jay, son of William James Jay, chaplain to [[Duleep Singh]]. By 1889, Holy Trinity church, with a church hall and school, had opened on Old Nichol Street.<ref name="vch">{{cite web |title=Bethnal Green: List of Churches Pages 217-226 A History of the County of Middlesex: Volume 11, Stepney, Bethnal Green. |url=https://archive.british-history.ac.uk/vch/middx/vol11/pp217-226 |website=British History Online |publisher=Victoria County History, 1998 |access-date=2 January 2025}}</ref> Controversially, the church hosted a boxing club and gymnasium, which Father Jay saw as vital to reclaiming local men from street brawls.<ref>{{cite web |title=Inside the skin of a slum |url=https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2008/4-july/news/uk/inside-the-skin-of-a-slum |website=Church Times |access-date=2 January 2025}}</ref> In 1894, the church opened a lodging house, Trinity Chambers.<ref name="vch"></ref> In 1893, work began on building the [[Boundary Estate]], as a [[slum clearance]] project.
