There is some evidence that shellfish [[Food intolerance|intolerance]] exists in an unknown proportion of the population. The symptoms of this do not include the immune and respiratory symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, hyperventilation, or anaphylaxis, but do involve gastrointestinal distress, such as nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. <ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Firszt |first1=K. |last2=Sebastien |first2=K. |last3=Gleich |first3=G.
