As of the [[2000 United States census]],<ref name="GR2" /> there were 3,155 persons, 1,408 households, and 691 families residing in the borough. The population density was {{convert|5,162.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 2,840 housing units at an average density of {{convert|4,646.8|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the borough was 89.95% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 4.03% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.63% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.86% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.17% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 3.36% from two or more races. There were 1,408 households, out of which 25.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.9% were non-families. 40.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.93.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>

In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.8 males.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>

The median income for a household in the borough was $25,963, and the median income for a family was $27,197. Males had a median income of $30,354 versus $21,899 for females.
