The racial makeup of the city was 80.4% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.1% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 12.4% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.0% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.1% [[Race (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.7% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 4.1% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 4.1% of the population.

The population of the Rapid City metropolitan statistical area ([[Pennington County, South Dakota|Pennington]] and [[Meade County, South Dakota|Meade]] Counties) was 139,074 at the 2020 census. Rapid City is also included in the [[Rapid City, South Dakota metropolitan area|Rapid City-Spearfish combined statistical area]], which, with the addition of [[Lawrence County, South Dakota|Lawrence County]], had a 2020 census population of 164,842.
