As of the [[2000 United States census]]<ref name="GR2" /> there were 20,215 people, 8,742 households, and 5,122 families residing in the township. The population density was {{convert|1,707.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 9,133 housing units at an average density of {{convert|771.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the township was 58.20% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 7.58% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.10% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 30.51% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.01% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.36% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.24% from two or more races. As part of the 2000 Census, 16.97% of Plainsboro Township residents identified themselves as being [[Indian American]]. There were 8,742 households, out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 2.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 3.06.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>

In the township the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 45.2% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 4.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.8 males.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>
