[[Umeboshi]], [[katsuobushi|okaka]], or [[tsukudani]] have long been frequently used as fillings for onigiri. Generally, onigiri made with pre-seasoned rice is not filled with ingredients. Plain (salt only) onigiri is called ''shio-musubi''.

Typical fillings are listed below:
