He was promoted to a Formula One race seat after the [[1993 Italian Grand Prix|Italian Grand Prix]], when Andretti left Formula One. There he remained in a critical condition under care of the Trauma Service, the Neurosurgical Unit, and the Intensive Care Unit and remained in the hospital for approximately two months.
